PWD is an association of independent, multi-issue, national and community-based disability rights organizations working for equal opportunities for disabled people in Uganda. PWD was founded in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, in 1989 as a membership organization, with chapters in 10 districts, reaching 1/3 one-third of Uganda’s 21 million people.A board of directors manages the day-to-day operations, and resources come from international volunteer support, private donations, commercial enterprises, and limited public funding. Mission/VisionPWD's vision is to establish peace and accessible living for all people. PWD's mission is to achieve this vision by promoting awareness, advocating peace, and establishing services that will improve the status of people with disabilities in general, and the people of Uganda in particular. ObjectivesPWD’s goals in sustaining the organization and in enhancing the status of people with disabilities are:
MembershipThe PWD membership comprises primarily of organizations of people with disabilities and their families from all parts of Uganda. PWD offers its members the opportunity to become involved both on the district and on national levels. PWD members strive toward improving the standard of living of people with disabilities by assist them, their families, and primary care givers with the development of livelihood programs such as poultry rearing, pig rearing and shoe-mending, and income-generating activities like crafts, and agriculture.
