StrikeForce Technologies
has developed a challenge response system for email which appears to be usable
by everyone. This system would help to cut down Spam, and appears to be
usable by all. They system is still under development. Details of
how the system works appear below:
Here is an example of how SpamSecure works:
1. A sender sends an email to teddy@sftnj.com.
2. SpamSecure intercepts the email before it goes to
the email server.
3. SpamSecure looks at the list of addresses for
teddy@sftnj.com to see if the email address comes
from an approved sender. If it does, it forwards
the
email to the email server. Else, it sends a message
back to the sender to authenticate the email.
4. An authentication client on the sender's PC gets
the
message and displays a box, prompting the sender
to enter a code (i.e. a password) for
teddy@sftnj.com.
5. The sender enters the code, which is then sent to
SpamSecure.
6. If the code is correct, the email is forwarded to
the email server. Else, it is dropped or placed in
a Spam folder.
Note:
1. For this scheme to work, an authorized sender has
to download an authentication client and know the
code for each email address that is protected by
SpamSecure.
These codes can also be stored in a file on the
senders PC and when an authentication request is
recieved from SpamSecure, the authentication client
automatically sends the appropriate code without
displaying a box and asking the user to enter the
code.
2. Alternatively, instead of authenticating every
email, the authentication process is used only
for the first time the sender sends the email.
The senders email address is then placed in a
pre-authorized list of addresses.
