It has many causes. For older adults, vision loss may be due to macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts or stroke. In working age adults, diabetes, retinitis pigmentosa or accidents can cause significant vision loss. Causes of vision loss in children include cortical vision impairment, retinopathy of prematurity, optical nerve atrophy, albinism or juvenile diabetes. While vision loss does change the way you see the details of the world around you, with the proper tools and training, it does not have to change the way you live. People with impaired sight are able to succeed in school, in the workplace, and in the home. To see what a person with conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or glaucoma sees, please visit About Low Vision.
