On and after September 11, thousands of people in the lower Manhattan area were directly exposed to the toxic cloud created by the collapse of the towers - which contained an estimated 400 tons of asbestos. Due to the long latency period, these individuals are just now starting to become ill with mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.
