Most people are exposed to low levels of asbestos at some point during their lives. However, not everyone suffers from the adverse effects of exposure. Where asbestos is present in residential homes, the risk of developing asbestos-related diseases is much reduced in comparison to the risks for occupational exposure. In residential, commercial, and public buildings, the risks are reduced by encapsulating or enclosing asbestos-containing materials, and by removing such materials when necessary.
