FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 3/13/03

On 27 and 28 March 2003 ICDRI will be participating in the Nice, France “Accessibility for All” conference addressing the role of European Standardization for accessibility to products, services and environments. Cynthia D. Waddell, Executive Director and Law, Policy and Technology Consultant, has accepted an invitation to speak about US Accessible Web Policy and Law as well as the Manila Declaration and outcome documents recently published at the conclusion of the interregional seminar and workshop “Empowering Persons with Disabilities through ICT” held in the Philippines.

The purpose of the “Accessibility for All” Conference is to present the achievements from standardization to date and to trigger new input from all interested parties through the collection of new standardization requirements. The stated goal is to improve their impact in the world of new technologies.

The conference is a common initiative of European Standards Organizations: European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). CEN, CENELEC and ETSI develop, with their industries, standards for the benefit of all socio-economic partners. The conference will cover the wide range of standardization from construction design, ergonomics, transport services, intelligent homes and buildings to telecommunications.

Cynthia Waddell’s participation is co-sponsored by ICDRI and IT-Test, Accessibility Testing and Consulting Services. IT-Test is a consortium of organizations including RMIT University, the Performance Technologies Group and Vision Australia Foundation.

A public policy and technology expert, Cynthia Waddell is a former Americans with Disabilities Act Compliance Officer for the City of San Jose and is an expert in rights-based legislation such as building construction, employment and the US Section 508 Electronic and Information Technology Accessibility Standards. She leads ICDRI’s Accessibility Oversight Professional Consulting Services for government and private sector clients. This effort supports the mission of ICDRI to increase opportunities for people with disabilities by identifying barriers to participation and promoting best practices and universal design of technology for the global community.
