Sports Expo Gets Wheels in Motionat Barrow Neurological Institute
For people who can no longer walk, the thought of strapping on a pair of snow skis, jumping into the ocean or hopping on a horse can be a bit daunting. But this year’s Wheelchair Sports and Adaptive Recreation Expo is set to show people with brain and/or spinal chord injuries and illnesses that an entire world of athletic and recreation activities is open to them. “Using a wheelchair or walker doesn’t limit you from being able to run rapids, race a car or play a game of rugby. We want to encourage people with brain and spinal injuries to check out all the activities that are available to them, find a passion and participate. Staying active is an important part of everyone’s physical and mental well-being and we encourage that,” says Jo Lemons, recreational therapist at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joe’s. This year’s Wheelchair Expo is set for Saturday, Nov. 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in St. Joe’s Neuro Rehab Unit (just north of Thomas Road on Third Avenue). The event is free. A long list of recreational activities will be represented including basketball, tennis, rugby, football, snow skiing, road racing, horseback riding, scuba diving, rowing, cycling, water skiing and adaptive driving. For more information about the sports clinic, contact Jo Lemons at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center at 602-406-3606 or jlemons@chw.edu . -Barrow-
