VA and Employment of Disabled Vets.Resource Summary Page
Resource: VA and Employment of Disabled Vets. Associated Organization: Veteran's Administration Country of Origin: USA Address: City: State or Province: ZIP or Postal Code: Telephone: TTY: Fax: Email: cochran.clayton@forum.va.gov Site Summary: "VA has been selected "Public Sector Employer of the Year" by Careers & the DisABLED magazine. Our efforts to employ those with disabilities are a natural outgrowth of our mission of service and care for veterans, particularly those scarred by military service. Last year our rehabilitation and training programs placed 7,400 veterans with disabilities in jobs or independent living situations. We employ 20,500 people with disabilities, more than any other federal agency, and 14,400 of these employees are veterans. In 1996, 10 percent of our permanent employees with disabilities received promotions -- the same percentage as employees without disabilities. We view workplace accommodations for those with disabilities as a natural and ordinary way of getting the job done. For us in VA this recognition should be 'no big deal,' but it is truly important to all of us, particularly those with disabilities who are part of the productive VA family."
